According to Hegel it is the realm of the universal, the freedom of thought that such true sacrifice leads to. This is why he finds it convenient at this moment to quote from the Bible: “The fear of the Lord is indeed the beginning of wisdom.” (§195) 

As for the servant, there might be something else that happened in the struggle. Facing death, this absolute master, the self-conscious subject evidently felt fear for its whole existence. According to Hegel, however, in this experience it took a certain positive lesson as well. In this experience it had inwardly fallen into dissolution, trembled in its depths, and all that was fixed within it has been shaken loose. 

Absolutni gospodar, smrt, ki zahteva absolutno podvrženje, tako tresočega se v celoti vrže nazaj vanj samega.

Tako sledi preobrat, v katerem gre hlapčevska zavest, kot vase nazaj potlačena, se pravi, iz svoje izsebnosti vase vrnjena zavest, v sebe in kot vsakdo, ki gre v sebe, se spremeni, kar tu pomeni: začne misliti 'samozavedno'. Na sebi je hlapčevstvo najskrajnejše nasprotje pravega samozavedanja: »Najpoprej je za hlapčevstvo gospodar bistvo« (st.105, 201).
